The Greater Sin

American Catholics are in an uproar. According to CNSNews.com, prior to President Obama’s Tuesday speech at Georgetown University (a Jesuit institution), White House officials asked university officials to cover the IHS monogram inscribed on a pediment at the back of the stage. (IHS is an acronym for Iesus Hominum Salvator, which is Latin for “Jesus, Savior of Men”). Georgetown Associate Vice President Julie Green Bataille stated, “Georgetown honored the White House staff’s request to cover all of the Georgetown University signage and symbols behind the Gaston Hall stage.” (http://www.cnsnews.com/public/Content/Article.aspx?rsrcid=46784) On Thursday CBNNews.com reportedly received a statement from the White House stating that “decisions made about the backdrop for the speech were made to have a consistent background of American flags, which is standard for many presidential events. Any suggestions to the contrary are simply false.” (http://www.cbn.com/CBNnews/581525.aspx) Interestingly, when former First Lady Laura Bush spoke at Georgetown’s Gaston Hall on Dec 4, 2006 there was no need for the IHS monogram to be covered. (Photo of Laura Bush and the IHS monogram can be viewed at (http://www.cnsnews.com/public/Content/Article.aspx?rsrcid=46769)

I do not believe for a moment that the IHS monogram was covered merely for aesthetic reasons. Our president simply did not want to be photographed in front of any symbol of Christ worship. I am not as angry as others about the IHS monogram request because I do not expect anything better from our president. Barack Obama has proven through his words and his actions that he is not a Christian. Then again, in truth, neither is he a Muslim or a Jew, or even a Scientologist for that matter. Obama is a humanist. He believes that Man is God and that we all hold the “Christ principle” within ourselves. “Yes, we can” really means, “Yes, Man can save itself.” This is why as insulting as Obama’s request was, it is the Society of Jesus that is guilty of the greater sin by agreeing to cover the IHS monogram.

A Roman Catholic order whose members define themselves as soldiers of Christ agreeing to cover the name of the Lord? Simply apostasy.

Although considering the jaded track record of the Jesuits–liberation theology, rejection of Papal authority–their burying of the Christ monogram is hardly surprising.

If Georgetown’s Jesuit officials were true soldiers of Christ they would have responded to the White House request by respectfully suggesting that the president “Go scratch.” And when Pres Obama objected they could have politely held the front door open to prevent it from hitting him in the ass as he was leaving.

Coming Up After This Commercial Break: The Rapture

We’re only four days away from the anointing of the messiah. On Tuesday, Jan 20 Barack Obama will be sworn in as President of the United States. The mountains will crumble and the skies will open. A dove will descend on Obama’s head or perhaps on the Lincoln Bible that he will use to pledge his oath. If it were June or July our president-elect might even emerge from the Potomac River, symbolizing the nation’s washing away of the Bush Administration.

Well, maybe not.

Sure I am being facetious. Yet, even the most objective observer must confess that the adoration of Obama has reached dizzying heights, even redefining the term “cult of personality”. Think I am exaggerating:

$ After hearing that Obama was a Spider-Man fan growing up, Marvel Comics decided to devote an issue to the webbed super hero and the president-elect. Obama is featured on the cover giving Spidey a thumbs-up. Apparently the two even fist-bump in the issue.

$ Masonry, a society condemned by the Catholic Church, is holding an inaugural ball in honor of our president-elect. According to a press release announcing the event, on Jan 20 The William R. Singleton-Hope-Lebanon Lodge #7 of Washington D.C. will host the “first-ever Masonic Inaugural Ball in honor of President-elect, Barack Obama and Vice-President Elect Joseph Biden.” Considering that Freemasonry has existed in the U.S. since our nation’s inception, it is surprising that this is only D.C.’s first Masonic inaugural ball. (Incidentally, among the reasons the Catholic Church demands that its flock not join Freemasonry is that “theoretically and practically it undermines the
Catholic and Christian faith, first in its members and through them in the rest of society, creating religious indifferentism and contempt for orthodoxy and ecclesiastical authority.”) http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/09771a.htm

$ The Brooklyn Cyclones, a minor league baseball team that plays in Coney Island, will rename itself the “Baracklyn Cyclones” on June 23 to honor our president elect. The team will dress in a red, white, and blue uniform with the name Baracklyn Cyclones spread across the jersey. Fans who attend will receive an Obama bobble-head doll. What connection the president-elect has to Brooklyn to warrant this adulation is unknown . . . at least to me.

In truth, although I did not vote for Obama and I disagree with him intensely on certain issues, I feel sorry for him. With the expectations heaped upon him he cannot help but fail. The number of Americans, including those in the media, who expect him to lead us out of this “recession” is staggering. This global financial collapse has been brewing for decades and experts are as clueless as the average person as to the direction the world economy is headed. Yet, people still expect Obama to shepherd us to the promised land.

Our new president appears to be an intelligent man who will work diligently as president. In light of the executives he has selected for his administration, he seems to want a diverse group that reaches across the political spectrum. That is a welcome sign and we wish him well.

But let’s remember Psalm 145: 2-3:
“Put not your trust in princes: In the children of men, in whom there is no salvation.”

Screening Out The Unborn

Now that Barack Obama has been elected president, Catholics can expect the battle to defend the unborn to be fiercer than ever. Feminist groups like NOW will demand legislation that removes all restrictions to abortion, and they will find a sympathetic ear in the White House. Pro-life supporters will need to join forces to withstand the onslaught, and one group whose assistance would prove invaluable is the medical community. Unfortunately, this group primarily has remained silent in defense of the unborn.

This realization struck me yesterday as I read the Wall Street Journal’s “Letters to the Editor” section. Two doctors had responded to an October 25 Wall Street Journal article entitled, “The Toughest Test”, which discussed how prenatal genetic testing is influencing parents’ decisions on whether to abort their children. (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122238185398776759.html) Below are the two doctors’ letters in their entirety:

· “For-profit companies that offer prenatal genetic testing services are shameful; they play upon the fears of expectant parents, gladly accept testing fees, and then leave these parents and their (ill-equipped) doctors to deal with the aftermath.

I loathe the day that my daughter shows up at her first prenatal visit, only to be handed a list of "diseases" to test for, just to make sure that "everything is OK with the baby." This represents a giant step backward for modern medicine. We should remember that it is genetic diversity that is essential for the survival of all species, including human beings.”

· As a physician who daily performs ultrasounds and has delivered many babies over the years, I read with sadness that physicians "tried, but failed to persuade" a couple to terminate a pregnancy that they felt wasn't worthy and that 80% of women choose to terminate their pregnancies after receiving a positive diagnosis of Down syndrome ("More Prenatal Testing Brings New Worries," Oct. 25).

As one who took the original Hippocratic oath that directs physicians to "first do no harm" and "never proscribe abortion," I find myself trying to persuade couples of the value of each human life whether disabled or not.

Prenatal testing itself may put a physician in material cooperation with the destruction of a human life whose future is uncertain. Let us give the unborn the benefit of life and support through possible cures or through hospice until natural death.

Mark Druffner, M.D.

Granted there are physicians who would disagree with the above assessments. Yet, I suspect there are many more who would agree but who remain silent.

Someone needs to remind them that the unborn cry out for their voices.
